Healthcare cover for you and your family

Guide to health insurance

Why do people buy private health insurance?

As lifestyles and expectations change, an increasing number of people are choosing private health insurance (also known as private medical insurance) as a way of getting prompt treatment and more choice.

According to the Association of British Insurers, some 7,140,000 people had some form of private health cover in April 2008. So what are the sort of reasons that might make people consider private medical cover?

  • prompt treatment

  • patient choice

  • a plan for your budget

Prompt treatment

The NHS does a good job in difficult circumstances of looking after the nation’s health. But although waiting times are being reduced, at the end of September 2008 54,885 people had been waiting more than three months for in-patient treatment.* This doesn't include the number of people waiting for specialist consultations and diagnosis.

Under some circumstances, then, if you want prompt treatment, going private may be your best option.

Patient choice

As a private patient, you can often choose when you have your treatment, which specialist treats you and the hospital you are treated in.

At AXA PPP healthcare we have a network of over 250 quality assessed hospitals. Plus we offer a private en-suite room with TV and radio in most hospitals.

A plan for your budget

You can choose a private health insurance to suit your budget – the more you invest, the more treatments your policy is likely to pay for.
